Dark Alleys

In the movies or crime shows...
Why do people always choose the dark alleys to walk home at night?
Why do people always run into the dark alley when someone is chasing them?
Why do people walk to the darkest part of a parking garage, alone when they hear a noise instead of getting into their car to drive over there???
Just wondering...
